Senator the Hon Penny Wong is Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Leader of the Government in the Senate. Elected as a Senator for South Australia in 2001, she served as Australia’s first Minister for Climate Change and Water and later as Minister for Finance. Senator Wong made history as the first woman to lead the Government and the Opposition in the Senate. She later served six years as Shadow Foreign Minister before becoming Minister for Foreign Affairs in 2022. As Foreign Minister, she has focused on advancing the priorities of our region, strengthening Australia’s relationships, building national resilience and reinforcing the international rules.
