Confronting the new world order

Wednesday, May 6, 2026  6:15 pm - 7:15 pm AEDT

Join us for an address by Thomas Wright, a Nonresident Fellow at the Lowy Institute and senior National Security Council official in the Biden administration, on the unravelling of the post–Cold War international order and what comes next. Dr Wright argues that rather than collapsing from a single shock, the order unwound as China, Russia, and the United States each adopted increasingly revolutionary foreign policies — rejecting limits on trade, territorial conquest, and alliances. The result is not yet a new order, but a volatile transitional era marked by intensified great-power competition, economic fragmentation, rising militarisation, and deep uncertainty about the future.

The event will include audience Q&A, moderated by the Lowy Institute's Sam Roggeveen.

Books will be available to purchase.
